Former Mayor of Vancouver
Yinan Max Wang is one of the many talented people of Vancouver who are dedicated to making the community better.
When I was Mayor of Vancouver Max came to my attention through one of his books. Because of the important role that Chinese people play in the City of Vancouver I thought that his efforts to increase understanding between English speaking and Chinese speaking citizens was very valuable and needed to be encouraged. Although my comprehension of Chinese writing is very poor I remember struggling through the text and marvelling at the interesting insights that he had. It is often the people who come from somewhere else that can see a place more clearly and understand it’s most important truths.
Max is a man who has the rare qualities of great creativity in developing successful concepts but also the persistence and hard work required to make them happen. His photographs have attracted the attention of some of the best photographers in North America. His ideas on improving the community have been considered by the Prime Minister of Canada and other important decision-makers. His books have received the attention of several high-ranking government officials in China. As a disabled person I have been impressed by his advocacy for having the Paralympic Games held before the Olympic Games, something that prompted communication between him and the office of the Queen.
Max is very intrigued by the human experience in its many varieties. But he also sees the common thread that runs through us all. He believes that we are all better off when we are able to participate in each other’s journeys through life. Max set off to understand Canada better and by doing so he became a part of the Canadian experiment. Canada is unusual in the realm of nation states with its two official languages and embrace of multiculturalism. It sees strength in diversity. Max has experienced this personally more than most Canadians and he has a lot to teach even those of us who have deep roots here.
Max has traveled the country asking the most diverse group of citizens very similar questions and by doing so he has achieved something very significant. He has helped us to understand ourselves both in our diversity and in our similarity. As the world becomes smaller through increased communication and trade we will need more people like Max who can help us be more understanding and empathetic. The future of our lives together on planet Earth may depend on it.
